Jude freed her from her parents’ control and forced her mother, Lady Nore, to swear an oath of allegiance to her. In it, we were introduced to nine-year-old Suren, nominal Queen of the Court of Teeth, who was being used and abused by her parents as a way of trying to undermine the King of Faerie.

TSH is set about ten years after the events of Queen of Nothing, which I found a very disappointing climax to the Folk of the Air trilogy. But I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing.

Wren in comparison does come across as passive. I do understand why, and I’ll address them in more detail later, but basically you need to go into this book NOT expecting a heroine like Jude. Jude is truly one of a kind her manipulativeness, viciousness, and proactivity is what makes TCP so special. I can see a lot of other readers feel disappointed at the romance/characterisation in this book. But if she agrees, it will mean guarding her heart against the boy she once knew and a prince she cannot trust, as well as confronting all the horrors she thought she left behind.ĭon’t expect another The Cruel Prince, but do expect a very good faery book. Now seventeen, Oak is charming, beautiful, and manipulative. He’s on a mission that will lead him into the north, and he wants Suren’s help. Suren is saved by none other than Prince Oak, heir to Elfhame, to whom she was once promised in marriage and who she has resented for years. Lonely, and still haunted by the merciless torments she endured in the Court of Teeth, she bides her time by releasing mortals from foolish bargains. She believes herself forgotten until the storm hag, Bogdana chases her through the night streets. Suren, child queen of the Court of Teeth, and the one person with power over her mother, fled to the human world. There, she is using an ancient relic to create monsters of stick and snow who will do her bidding and exact her revenge. But in the icy north, Lady Nore of the Court of Teeth has reclaimed the Ice Needle Citadel. And a quest that may destroy them both.Įight years have passed since the Battle of the Serpent.
